Inaugural travel tips for parents

By Tanesha Manigo

The Swearing-In Ceremonies for Barack Obama, as we know, have generated a lot of attention. Millions are traveling from across the country to be a part of this historical day, though many may not be aware of all the security measures surrounding the event. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) has issued advisories to help those traveling to Washington DC remain safe. I believe that one such advisory regarding parents traveling with their children is worthy of your attention. Below I have compiled seven travel tips to keep you and your children secure during your visit to DC.

Travel tip #1: Everyone, including children, attending the Inaugural Swearing-In Ceremonies must have their own ticket in any of the seated or standing areas. Infants too young to walk are the exception.

Travel tip #2: Strollers, baby carriages, back packs, and all other large bags are prohibited within the ticketed areas. All purses and other allowed bags will be searched by hand.

Travel tip #3: Remember to check the weather forecast for January 20, 2009 as umbrellas will not be allowed within the secured perimeter, and there will be no tents or covered areas in the West Front of the Capitol.

Travel tip #4: Plan to arrive early, though expect to stand in long lines at security check points. This is important to note because small children do get restless.

Travel tip #5: Be aware of surroundings and keep an eye on children. There will be a lot of traffic before and after the ceremonies with the multitude of

people getting in and leaving the Capitol grounds.

Travel tip #6: Plan accordingly for smaller children and infants. Unlike a typical day in DC, concession stands will not be on hand, and the only available restrooms will be portable ones.

Travel tip #7: If you definitely need to bring any of these restricted items, all of the above will be allowed in the non-ticketed National Mall area.

The goal for parents traveling with children is to plan ahead and be safe so that your entire family can enjoy this epic occasion of our new President being sworn-in.
